Over a career spanning three decades, Gerardo Somoza has travelled the Americas and Europe as a photographer specializing in fashion, portraiture and still life. He settled in New York in 1977 and works from his office in midtown Manhattan. “I feel I’ve become a perennial New Yorker,” he comments. “The city’s energy helps me shape each frame to excite the senses and tell a little part of our human story.”
Gerardo’s work in fashion includes runway shows, lookbooks and catalogs for leading fashion houses. Among them are DKNY, John Varvatos, Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Rebecca Minkoff, Public School, Oscar de la Renta, Anna Sui, Pronovias, Lakum, and Wella Professionals. In 2015, he was honored by Photo District News as winner of its annual competition for fashion and beauty imagery, THE LOOK.
Movie stars, politicians, industry leaders, athletes and fashion icons all have been the subjects of his portraiture work. They include actor Chris Cooper, medical internist Dr. Erika Schwartz, British fashion designer Jenny Packham, and Skylar Grey for L'Oréal Féria.
Among the many books featuring Gerardo’s photography are The Secret Lives of Frames: One Hundred Years of Art and History by Deborah Davis (Filipacchi Publishing) and Fun, Fashion, Fetish by Janet Bloor (Thames & Hudson). He has provided the photography for book jackets that include Raw Food by Natalia Rose and Chocolate, Please by Lisa Lampanelli (both Harper Collins).
